For example, typing an address followed by "Dear" would cause the Assistant to appear with the message, "It looks like you're writing a letter. It also presented tips and keyboard shortcuts. It appeared when the program determined the user could be assisted by using Office wizards, searching help, or advising users on using Office features more effectively. įirst introduced in Microsoft Office 97, the Office Assistant was codenamed TFC during development. As people already related to computers directly as they do with humans, the added human-like face emerged as an annoying interloper distracting the user from the primary conversation. Microsoft concluded that if humans reacted to computers the same way they react to other humans, it would be beneficial to include a human-like face in their software. Overview Īccording to Alan Cooper, the "Father of Visual Basic", the concept of Clippit was based on a "tragic misunderstanding" of research conducted at Stanford University, showing that the same part of the brain in use while using a mouse or keyboard was also responsible for emotional reactions while interacting with other human beings and thus is the reason people yell at their computer monitors. In November 2021, Microsoft officially updated their design of the paperclip emoji (□) on Windows 11 to be Clippit/"Clippy". The Tweet quickly surpassed 20,000 likes and they then announced to replace it. In July 2021, Microsoft used Twitter to show off a redesign of Clippit (which they called "Clippy" in the Tweet), and said that if it received 20,000 likes they would replace the paperclip emoji on Microsoft 365 with the character. The feature was removed altogether in Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac, as it continued to draw criticism even from Microsoft employees. Microsoft turned off the feature by default in Office XP, acknowledging its unpopularity in an ad campaign spoofing Clippit. The feature drew a strongly negative response from many users. The original Clippit from Office 97 was given a new look in Office 2000. Clippit was the default and by far the most notable Assistant (partly because in many cases the setup CD was required to install the other assistants), which also led to it being called simply the Microsoft Paperclip. The default assistant in the English version was named Clippit (commonly nicknamed Clippy), after a paperclip. It was included in Microsoft Office for Windows (versions 97 to 2003), in Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Project (versions 98 to 2003), Microsoft FrontPage (versions 20), and Microsoft Office for Mac (versions 98 to 2004). The Office Assistant is a discontinued intelligent user interface for Microsoft Office that assisted users by way of an interactive animated character which interfaced with the Office help content. To get that Bolan look: stalk through the streets on platform boots. He just really enjoyed dressing up and flaunting his new outfits, and performing on stage gave him ample opportunity. Nor was his love of makeup and Anello & Davide girl’s tap shoes any indicator of sexuality, although he was bisexual. However, he wasn’t aiming to crossdress or to look like a woman. Said to have been influenced by the Rocky Horror Picture Show, or perhaps from seeing his idol Jimi Hendrix do likewise, Marc enjoyed a nice feather boa on stage, along with other gender-bending accessories.Īlthough he wasn’t alone in the glam rock arena, being joined by David Bowie, Gary Glitter and even Mick Jagger for a while, he was, (did we mention?) perhaps the prettiest, which lent a different edge to his feminine frous. His beautiful nimbus of hair now grown and fully fluffed, Bolan was unafraid to accentuate those soulful eyes with a bit of eyeliner. It was 1971 when Bolan, ahead of everyone else, moved into the makeup, glitter, feather boas and platform heels of Glam Rock. Unlike the music itself, nothing that would really strike you as peculiar in those times. His clothes matched the hippy style at the time– longer hair, flowing garments. Tyrannosaurus Rex performed songs written by Marc Bolan, surreal, poetic, and a bit hard to get into, though massively championed by John Peel. Here’s a picture of him (left) at a festival in 1968. Marc Bolan moved on to a hippie style with his next band, Tyrannosaurus Rex, still in 1967. (By all accounts, it was a happy three months, since the band was encouraged to be madcap and as well as naked photoshoots he got to whip his guitar with a chain, which sounds fun). But he was only with them for about 3 months. It’s not his finest sartorial moment, let’s be honest. They were dressed (by their manager) all in white or sometimes in nothing but strategically placed flowers. In 1967 Marc Bolan became part of the band John’s Children, which had terribly naughty lyrics like “Lift up your skirt and fly”, written by Bolan. He’s immaculate.īut Marc Bolan moved on from the Modernist look in ‘65, about a year before it was completely passé for everyone else. Marc Bolan is the one in the foreground in both pictures. (His name was Mark Feld back then – his birth name). Here he is, photographed with his mates for a fashion feature at 15 in 1962. To add to his style nous, Marc was arrogant, confident, and always the leader of the gang. It’s likely that they started out of the highest quality (surely a stolen motorbike must = at least a few good quality shirts) but because he was only little, his suits were always expertly tailored to fit his diminutive stature too. Marc Bolan’s first style obsession was being the perfect Mod – bumfreezer jackets, slender trousers and button-down shirts. 8/26/2023 0 Comments Wiggly piggly 269The company headquarters is located in Keene, New Hampshire. There are more than 600 independently owned and operated stores in 17 states. Ī Piggly Wiggly store in Springhill, Louisiana, in August 2011 C&S acquired regional warehouses Piggly Wiggly Carolina in 2013 and Piggly Wiggly Midwest in 2021. Fleming filed for bankruptcy in 2003, and C&S Wholesale Grocers acquired most of the business, including Piggly Wiggly. Malone & Hyde was acquired by Fleming Companies in 1988. Piggly Wiggly was acquired by the wholesale grocer Malone & Hyde in 1982. Someone once asked him why he had chosen such an unusual name for his organization, to which he replied, "So people will ask that very question." Present company There are two theories: One story says that, while riding a train, he looked out his window and saw several little pigs struggling to get under a fence, which prompted him to think of the rhyme. Name Īccording to the Piggly Wiggly web site, Saunders was "reluctant" to explain the origin of the company's name. Īccording to John Brooks, Piggly Wiggly's "greatly changed corporate structure.flourished into the 1960s," and hundreds of stores "operated under a franchise agreement with the Piggly Wiggly Corporation, of Jacksonville, Florida. However, he remained interested in automated shopping, with which he experimented initially with the Keedoozle store until he died in 1953. Īfter losing control of Piggly Wiggly, Saunders had no further association with the company. In 1935, all 179 Canadian Piggly Wiggly were also sold to Canada Safeway, which merged with Sobeys in 2013. įollowing these events, the company was divided into strategic units and sold to regional grocery chains, including Kroger, Safeway, National Tea, and Colonial. Saunders reputedly lost $9 million in the attempted corner. The Stock Exchange Governors responded by deciding that a corner had been established in Piggly Wiggly and removed the stock from the Board, eventually forcing Saunders to turn over his assets to the banks that had financed his leveraged position. In November 1922, Saunders attempted a squeeze on the substantial short interest in the stock, running the share price up from 40 to 120 and profiting by millions on paper. At its peak in 1932 (see Clarence Saunders), the company operated 2,660 stores and posted annual sales in excess of $180 million. The success of Piggly Wiggly was phenomenal, and other independent and chain grocery stores changed to self-service in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1937, Piggly Wiggly became the first company to provide shopping carts for customers, in their Oklahoma branch they were also the first company to use Point of sale lanes for payment. The original Piggly Wiggly Store, Memphis, Tennessee, 1918 Instantly, packaging and brand recognition became important to companies and consumers alike. The customers selected merchandise as they continued through the maze to the cashier. Customers at Piggly Wiggly entered the store through a turnstile and walked through four aisles to view the 605 items sold in packages and organized into departments. The concept of the "self-serving store" was patented by Saunders in 1917. Piggly Wiggly Corporation secured the self-service format and issued franchises to hundreds of grocery retailers to operate its stores. Others were initially experimenting with this format, which came to be known as a "groceteria", reminding people of cafeterias, another relatively new, self-service idea. Losses due to easier shoplifting were more than offset by profits from increased impulse purchasing. Piggly Wiggly introduced the innovation of allowing customers to go through the store, gathering their goods, thus cutting costs and lowering prices. This created greater costs and higher prices. Instead, a customer would give a list of items to a clerk, who would then collect them throughout the store. A replica of the original store has been constructed in the Memphis Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium, a mansion that Saunders built as his private residence, which was later sold to the city.Īt the time of its founding, grocery stores did not allow customers to gather their goods. It was founded on Septem (although it did not open until five days later due to delays in construction), at 79 Jefferson Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, by Clarence Saunders. Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service grocery store. It is a mapping, a function,įrom Rn to Rm. Redundant with the closure under scalar multiplication. Will always write, oh and the zero vector has toīe a member of V. Vectors is also in V, I could just set the scalar And why I say that's redundant,īecause if I say that any multiple of these With n components here, because V is a subspace of Rn. Statement is that V, well it must contain the zero vector. And we sometimes call thisĬlosure under scalar multiplication. This is also going to be a member of our subspace. Of them, let's say a, and I multiply a by some scalar, that Of our subspace - we also know that if I pick one Subspace by a scalar - so the fact that those guys are members Subspace, we also know that if we multiply any member of our Vectors, or a plus b, is also in my subspace. Subspace, we then know that the addition of these two So let say I take the members a and b- they're both Subset of Rn where if I take any two members of that subset. What does it mean? That's just some set, or some In fact, I'm not even sure why Sal lists it as a rule of subspaces that they include the 0 vector because with rule #2 or rule #3 they have to include the zero vector anyways. Well, if A and -A are both in our subspace, then so must A+ (-A)… which is of course, the zero vector. After all, if A is a vector in our subspace, and so is -1*A (from rule #2) then the subspace must also include a zero vector because if vector addition holds, then the sum of any two vectors in our subspace must ALSO be in our subspace. In other words, rule #1 must hold if rule #2 is to hold.Īnd honestly, rule #1 also must hold if rule #3 is to hold. So for rule #2 to hold, the subspace must include the 0 vector. Well suppose we multiply by the scalar 0? We would get the 0 vector. If rule #2 holds, then the 0 vector must be in your subspace, because if the subspace is closed under scalar multiplication that means that vector A multiplied by ANY scalar must also be in the subspace. Well, imagine a vector A that is in your subspace, and is NOT equal to zero. Remember the three rules that Sal gave for the definition of a subspace? They were: 8/26/2023 0 Comments Viola tutor near meHere at TakeLessons, we offer the best online viola lessons, in addition to our amazing in-person private and group sessions.
